Energy 52
The Trance Project Behind Cafe Del Mar
Energy 52 is a German electronic music project created by producers Paul Schmitz-Moormann, also known as DJ Kid Paul, and Harald Blüchel, widely known as Cosmic Baby. The project became one of the defining names of early European trance through its atmospheric production, emotional melodies and enduring connection with Ibiza’s club culture.
The duo’s most celebrated recording, Café Del Mar, was originally created during the formative years of the German trance movement. Named after Ibiza’s famous sunset venue, the track combined a powerful electronic rhythm with a sweeping, instantly recognisable melody.
Café Del Mar developed from an underground club record into an international dance anthem. Different mixes helped introduce the track to successive generations, with notable interpretations from Three ’N One, Nalin & Kane, Marco V and other leading electronic artists.
The record has returned to the charts on several occasions and remains a fixture in trance compilations, DJ sets and dance-music retrospectives. Energy 52’s limited catalogue demonstrates how one carefully constructed production can influence club culture for decades.
